The General Archive of Ceuta is in charge of gathering, conserving and spreading the heritage of documents of the city of Ceuta. Therefore, the geographic scope of the archive is the city, although there are also documents, especially in the collection of graphics, of its environment, from both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar.

In spite of the fact that most of the collections were generated by the City Council, the autonomous competences have broadened its scope. Therefore,  there are collections inherited from the City Council, as those of the Santa y Real Casa de Misericordia; adquired, as the series of postcards; donated, as those of Orozco and Jarque; or transferred from other institutions.

Most of the documents date back to the 20th c., except those from the Santa y Real Casa de Misericordia (17th to 19th c.), and some ancient series of the city as Books of Minutes, or Supplies.

New documents will be brought in the archive, from the autonomous administration, once they have lost their administrative value, and more than 40 years have passed through transfer. At the same time, the archives will receive acquisitions and donations of historical value.

The Archive have, at your disposal, a service of consultation  and reproduction of documents, and you can also visit its facilities. Within the archive’s mission of spreading the collections, it offers its publication services.
